This is National Teen Driver Safety Week, and high schools in Michigan can have a Strive For a Safer Drive Program.

Kayla Thomas-Wright manages the program for the Office of Highway Safety Planning and says this is a message that needs to be repeated.

The Hands On  program is a program with four driving skills for life, and it is professional drivers from all over the country that will work with students on different skills,” Wright said. “So that would be hazard recognition, vehicle handling, speed and space management, and then distracted and impaired driving.”

Auto accidents are a leading cause of preventable death for teens 15 to 18 years old.

Thomas-Wright says younger drivers in Michigan had a higher incidence of speeding, failing to yield, and inability to stop in an assured clear distance.
