Michigan winters can be harsh, even for those who love the season’s cozy feeling. Experts say there are ways to beat the winter blues, which could be Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD.

A recent study found 40% of Americans feel down during this time of year. SAD is mostly linked to cold temperatures and shorter daylight hours, which can cause low mood, difficulty concentrating, and for some, worsening mental health struggles. Courtney Robison, a clinical social worker with Corewell Health, says several strategies can help manage the condition, with light therapy being a popular option.

“Where someone will get a light box,” Robison said. “It’s one of the most effective treatments for someone who has winter blues. The light box, it mimics what natural sunlight would do and it helps regulate your circadian rhythm and it improves your mood.”

Mental health professionals suggest 30 to 60 minutes of morning sunlight or bright light therapy. They also say you can combat the winter blues by shifting your mindset by revisiting New Year’s resolutions, as refocusing on personal goals can help ease depression.

Robison notes not all winter depression can be classified as SAD, as mild seasonal mood changes are common.
