The federal job cuts being spearheaded by Elon Musk could affect your visit to a popular national park in the region.
Indiana Dunes National Park has had to make some layoffs. Beth Shrader is a former National Parks Service worker who was stationed at Indiana Dunes. She told WSBT when the federal job cuts began, it at first looked like things were going to be OK.
“My employers, or my supervisors, told me that I was an exemplary employee and there was no reason to be let go,” Shrader said.
However, as a probationary employee, Shrader says that changed.
“Then very quickly it was reversed from, ‘Because you were doing a good job in your position, they can’t fire you,’ to a tearful phone call from my supervisor saying that OPM was going to fire all of us.”
Shrader says her department was already understaffed, so all of these cuts being ordered by Musk will only make things worse.
The Associated Press reports the Trump administration has so far laid off about 1,000 National Parks Service employees.
