Women are reminded to get a mammogram every year to check for breast cancer.
Dr. Katharine Yao of the American College of Surgeons was asked if men should also be screened.
“In general, no, they do not need to undergo screening as women do, but if they do have risk factors for breast cancer such as family history or a known genetic mutation in the family, then in those sorts of situations which we would call them more of a high risk situation, then they should consider breast awareness,” Yao said.
Yao says breast cancer mortality rates have dropped over the past 20 years and treatments have improved survival rates.
This is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
