Berrien Community Foundation is partnering with Lake Michigan College, African American History & Literature Gallery, the Arts and Culture Social Justice Committee & Krasl Art Center to assist the Unified Civic Monuments Project in their goal of establishing local monument installations in our communities. The UNIFIED Civic Monuments Movement is an initiative to commemorate social justice and honor the historic legacies of Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, Michigan. The project proposes to publicly place a total of 4 monuments by 2022. Two complementary monuments, one in each city, would represent recognized civil rights leader Martin Luther King. Two additional monuments, unique to each city, would honor a historic figure specific to that city.  The Berrien Community Foundation made a $10,000 grant for this project in our last round of For Good Grants.
