Berrien County Register of Deeds Laura Freehling has been named the Register of the Year by the Michigan Association of Registers of Deeds.

Freehling tells us she received the honor at the association’s annual conference this month. To be considered for Register of the Year, a nominee must be a member of the association for five years, be actively involved in the organization, and be on its board of directors.

Freehling says she was shocked to learn she’d been selected, noting past winners have included Berrien County Registers of Deeds Lori Jarvis and Bernice Tretheway, who just passed away this month at the age of 105.

Freehling has been register since October of 2018, when she was appointed following the death of Lori Jarvis. She says the Michigan Association of Registers of Deeds is an organization that represents all 83 Michigan registers of deeds, often helping them sort out complex property questions.
